I've always thought that Roller Derby sounded really cool, but I had never seen a bout. Actually, I never even knew the rules or logistics or... anything, really... but it just seemed so bad-ass.
So I kept an eye on the website for the Rat City Rollergirls, the Seattle roller derby league and, when the schedule came up, I planned a meetup event with my ladies' group.
And... it was great!
They were kind enough to play a short video about the rules and the purposes before the match so we knew what to look for. They also had an announcer explaining what was going on during the bout. My favorite team was Derby Liberation Front. I liked their awesome uniforms and their synchronized (read: intimidating) pre-bout warm-ups.
Even cooler than that, was the players' roller derby names. Names like Ophelia Melons, Yoko Onoudin't, and Coach Ida Slapter. I couldn't help but wonder, what would my roller derby name be?
But the coolest part? The junior roller derby made up of 9- and 10-year-old girls played a match between regular adult matches.
Their league name is The Tootsy Rollers! Ahhh, I love it!
If you ever get a chance to check out roller derby, I highly recommend it. It was awesome!
